Alex has been writing code to make music for people to drink beer and dance to since the year 2000, performing widely around Europe as a member of slub ( http://slub.org/ ). He has developed his own mini-programming language called `Tidal', based on the functional Haskell language, which he now uses for all his performances, including a recent collaboration with Scott Hewitt at Access Space. Tidal is optimised for fast and furious expression of beats and bass lines. Current work is on a visual front end for Tidal called `Text', where functions are played with on the screen, connections drawn between them automatically. The result is a messy visual language for making broken electronic dance music, with syntax of shape as well as symbols. Participants at the workshop will be introduced to Text as a brand new, rather unique approach to programming in live music, and will be encouraged to feed back criticism and ideas into the development process.
