Simon Roth Residency @ Access Space

In this residency, Simon will be under the mentorship of renowned sound artist and electronic musician Leafcutter John (Polar Bear, Lisa Knapp, Imogen Heap). They will focus on:

  • Hardware hacking and DIY instrument and sound toys building (using ideas from the Nicolas Collins incredible DIY handbook Handmade Electronic Music).
  • Live processing with Ableton/Max (processing drums and contact mic sources)
  • Composition (using prerecorded material and soundworlds) to produce 4 or 5 demo tracks

Simon and Leafcutter John will share the fruits of the residency on Thursday 10th November at Access Space @ Event Space, 20-24 Fargate, Sheffield S1 2HE.

About the artists:

Simon Roth

Simon is a multi-instrumentalist musician, composer and curator, known primarily as a drummer in the Contemporary and Klezmer music scenes. He has performed all over the world and features on several critically acclaimed recordings. He has written, released and performed his own work through Mayday Project, Stories and Land of If. He has staged interdisciplinary arts events as Pop-Up Circus (now Soapbox Circus) and in collaboration with JW3, Dash Arts and Brick Box. He works regularly with Play for Progress, a charity that uses music and creative therapies to build healthy and resilient relationships that support and amplify the voices of unaccompanied refugees and asylum-seekers. He is working on his first theatre solo show, ‘Behind the Beat’ (it’s basically Simon trying to set up a drum kit on stage plus distractions). He developed this with Haley McGee during a residency at Canada Water Theatre and The Albany. He is also learning DIY instrument building with sound artist Leafcutter John and makes radio shows for Faff FM.

Leafcutter John

Sound experimentalist, songwriter, lecturer, inventor and creator, John Burton (aka Leafcutter John) has collected impressive accolades over the past three decades, not only for his ingenuity in software and hardware production but also for this ability to craft rich, textured and melodic electronic music. His new record is his most accessible and joyous to date, combining field recordings (many inspired by the natural elements of coastal Norfolk, his former home county) and modular synthesizers into an irresistible rhythmic journey. Since 2010 John has been busy designing, building, and developing his light controlled musical interface, he’s performed world-wide using the system and given talks and workshops with it at various music and art schools. In 2014 he won the Quartz Award for Innovation and in 2017 the art world’s most coveted Paul Hamlyn Award. Recent shows include Sonar Hong Kong and WOMAD Festival.
