Vicky Clarke: MATERIALITY:
Sound sculpture to interface the physical & digital.
MATERIALITY explores sound sculpture as a medium to interface with Ableton music software via Arduino & DIY electronics. VICKY CLARKE has researched the sonic properties of glass & metal materials, working at London Sculpture Studio & the National Glass Centre, and the results are new sculptural instruments & a new physical/digital performance system. The process will be documented online with any code/schematics made available as open source. MATERIALITY has been funded by Arts Council England.
Bokkusu
are Charlie Collins (percussion & objects), Lyn Hodnett (voice & things), Derek Saw (trumpets).
Bokkusu brings together three of Sheffield’s most creative improvisers playing an array of musical and found objects. Metal, plastics, and a little acoustic techno.
CHARLIE COLLINS is a creative percussionist, free polyrhythmic drummer, and sound artist, based in the UK. His work continues to explore the boundaries between pure sound and rhythm, frequently incorporating metal percussion and free improvisation. Early recordings for cult labels Industrial, Fetish, and Doublevision were soon followed by collaborations with many of the pioneers of free improvisation.
DEREK SAW has worked in free improvisation and experimental jazz since his move to Sheffield, UK, in the mid 1970s, where he later played in legendary electric free/jazz group Bass Tone Trap. In the mid eighties, together with Martin Archer, he formed the respected Hornweb saxophone quartet, while also leading Rhythm Division, which included drummer Paul Hession.
LYN HODNETT is an artist, teacher and vocalist based in Sheffield.
Silicone Bake
is a collaboration between live coder Alex McLean and singer/guitarist Jake Harries, a bridge between semi-improvised pop and live coded techno, brought to life with unsolicited tales of sex, food, death, late capitalism and market economics. They will be attempting to use redundant computer technology and the tiny sounds of dead plants.
ALEX MCLEAN is an artist, musician and researcher. As well as Silicone Bake he’s part of Slub, Canute, and CCAI, co-founded the Algorave collective, and performs solo as Yaxu.
JAKE HARRIES is an artist, musician and vocalist. A former member of Sheffield industrial band Chakk and chillout pioneers, Heights of Abraham.
