SUMMARY:Yoko Miura with Charlie Collins and Derek Saw
DESCRIPTION:£5 cash on the door\nBring a bottle\nDoors open 7pm for 7:30 start\n\nAccess Space presents a rare opportunity to explore the sound world of the remarkable Yoko Miura.\nOnly briefly in the UK\, the hauntingly beautiful pianism of this Fukuoka based musician will engage in a series of dialogues with her regular UK collaborators. \n\nYOKO MIURA – piano\, melodeon\, toy piano\nCHARLIE COLLINS – waterphone\, metal\, percussion\nDEREK SAW – tuba & electronics\, pocket trumpet \n\nThis warmly intense trio\, hovering on the margins of free improvisation and contemporary composition\, is the natural extension of Yoko Miura and Charlie Collins 12 year association. Miura’s classical and jazz credentials\, an intuitive distillation of Takemitsu and Bley\, are the perfect foil for Collins and Saw’s fluid interplay.\n\n“A sense of space and elegant poise are key features in the musical world of Yoko Miura. Impressionistic glimpses\, like half remembered phrases sometimes left to hang in the air\, take the listener to a sound world filled with space and natural beauty.” \n\nYOKO MIURA\, born in Tokyo\, studied classical piano from the ages of 5 to18\, after which her already diverging classical and jazz influences led to studies with many of Japan’s leading teachers. Since 2001 she has travelled regularly outside of Japan\, performing and recording with many of the leading figures of European experimentalism\, including Lawrence Casserley\, Steve Beresford\, John Russell\, Hans Koch\, Alison Blunt\, Mia Zebelka\, Jean-Michel van Schouwburg\, and Gianni Mimmo. She has collaborated with Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra\, and recorded with US drum legend Matt Wilson.\n“I am trying to make a kind of different universe\, interweaving and exchanging with different processes\, values\, and ways\, with all people\, not just the musicians\, but also painters and dancers.”\n\nCHARLIE COLLINS is a creative percussionist\, free polyrhythmic drummer\, and sound artist\, based in Sheffield\, UK. His work continues to explore the boundaries between pure sound and rhythm\, frequently incorporating metal percussion and improvisation. During the 1970s he was involved in the nascent “Industrial” scene\, recording for cult labels Industrial\, Fetish\, and Doublevision\, while his lifelong interest in East Asian percussion and rhythm technique is displayed in current work with komungo player Eun-Jung Kim\, pianist Yoko Miura\, visual artist Bongsu Park\, composer Ryoko Akama\, voice artist Ami Yamasaki\, and Butoh dancers Tsukasa Kamidate and Mushimaru Fujieda.\nHe is one of a handful of musicians to have played both Derek Bailey’s Company Week and Top Of The Pops. \n\nDEREK SAW has worked in free improvisation and at the cutting edges of jazz since his move to Sheffield\, UK. He was a member of legendary electric free/jazz group Bass Tone Trap\, and in the mid eighties co-founded the respected Hornweb quartet\, while also organising his own Rhythm Division\, which included drummer Paul Hession. More recently he has worked with thereminist Beatrix Ward-Fernandez on her Trio project\, and collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists Sonny Simmons\, Gino Robair\, Linda Sharrock\, Anton Mobin\, Yoko Miura\, and Eun-Jung Kim. \nFor more info please email: jake@access-space.org

SUMMARY:Apocalyptic folk night
DESCRIPTION:An undisciplined night of folk noises from the past and future. \nBring your instruments\, voices\, laptops\, handmade electronics\, other noisemakers and your friends. \nThe idea is to run this like a folk club\, with people taking turns to play short pieces\, but not subscribing to any particular definition of what ‘folk music’ might be. Non-western\, improvised and generally strange music is very welcome. \nAcoustic music is also welcome. A PA will be available for laptops etc but to be inclusive to all folk\, we don’t expect things to get super loud. \nDonations on the door are welcome. Drinks will be available from the bar.
