SUMMARY:Alistair Zaldua\, E-violin + live electronics
DESCRIPTION:£5 cash on the door\nBring a bottle\nDoors open 7:30pm for 8:00pm start\n\nThis concert will feature a set of new compositions by Alistair Zaldua for the 5-string e-violin and live electronics. While each piece involves improvisation and experimental approaches to performance\, the machine listening involved in the electronics serves to operate as an improvisation partner. While collecting and processing data derived from the e-violin sound\, the electronics create expressive real and unreal spaces. This allows the violin to not only improvise into\, but also to interact with and against.\n\nAbout: Alistair Zaldua\nBritish-Colombian improviser\, composer\, and violinist\, Alistair Zaldua is based in Manchester. His work encompasses notated composition\, live electronics\, improvisation and collaboration with musicians and ensembles both in the UK and abroad. In 2018 his work manifesto for speaker and large ensemble was selected as a prize winner of the ilde Lieder Marx.Music Composition Competition by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. His album remote music (2020) was funded by a grant from the Arts Council UK Emergency Response Fund and comprises a set of open form postcard pieces. In 2020 he also received a Sound and Music COVID-19 Composer Award (2020). In 2021 the album Where The Wind Takes Us was released with Trio CZW (with Paul Cheneour\, flutes\, and Maureen Wolloshin\, oboe) on the pan y rosas discos label (Chicago). In June 2022 he was an artist in residence at Neither/Nor (Ytra Arna\, Bergen). Alistair currently works in duets with Lauren Redhead (organ\, spoken voice\, electronics)\, vocalist Alwynne Pritchard (Norway)\, saxophonist Christoph Gallio (Switzerland)\, and recently in trio with vocalist Franziska Baumann (Switzerland) and drummer Steve Noble (UK). He has been invited to work at the ExperimentalStudio (2023) in a project with trombonist Andrew Digby (Stuttgart). For more information email jake@access-space.org

SUMMARY:Yoko Miura with Charlie Collins and Derek Saw
DESCRIPTION:£5 cash on the door\nBring a bottle\nDoors open 7pm for 7:30 start\n\nAccess Space presents a rare opportunity to explore the sound world of the remarkable Yoko Miura.\nOnly briefly in the UK\, the hauntingly beautiful pianism of this Fukuoka based musician will engage in a series of dialogues with her regular UK collaborators. \n\nYOKO MIURA – piano\, melodeon\, toy piano\nCHARLIE COLLINS – waterphone\, metal\, percussion\nDEREK SAW – tuba & electronics\, pocket trumpet \n\nThis warmly intense trio\, hovering on the margins of free improvisation and contemporary composition\, is the natural extension of Yoko Miura and Charlie Collins 12 year association. Miura’s classical and jazz credentials\, an intuitive distillation of Takemitsu and Bley\, are the perfect foil for Collins and Saw’s fluid interplay.\n\n“A sense of space and elegant poise are key features in the musical world of Yoko Miura. Impressionistic glimpses\, like half remembered phrases sometimes left to hang in the air\, take the listener to a sound world filled with space and natural beauty.” \n\nYOKO MIURA\, born in Tokyo\, studied classical piano from the ages of 5 to18\, after which her already diverging classical and jazz influences led to studies with many of Japan’s leading teachers. Since 2001 she has travelled regularly outside of Japan\, performing and recording with many of the leading figures of European experimentalism\, including Lawrence Casserley\, Steve Beresford\, John Russell\, Hans Koch\, Alison Blunt\, Mia Zebelka\, Jean-Michel van Schouwburg\, and Gianni Mimmo. She has collaborated with Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra\, and recorded with US drum legend Matt Wilson.\n“I am trying to make a kind of different universe\, interweaving and exchanging with different processes\, values\, and ways\, with all people\, not just the musicians\, but also painters and dancers.”\n\nCHARLIE COLLINS is a creative percussionist\, free polyrhythmic drummer\, and sound artist\, based in Sheffield\, UK. His work continues to explore the boundaries between pure sound and rhythm\, frequently incorporating metal percussion and improvisation. During the 1970s he was involved in the nascent “Industrial” scene\, recording for cult labels Industrial\, Fetish\, and Doublevision\, while his lifelong interest in East Asian percussion and rhythm technique is displayed in current work with komungo player Eun-Jung Kim\, pianist Yoko Miura\, visual artist Bongsu Park\, composer Ryoko Akama\, voice artist Ami Yamasaki\, and Butoh dancers Tsukasa Kamidate and Mushimaru Fujieda.\nHe is one of a handful of musicians to have played both Derek Bailey’s Company Week and Top Of The Pops. \n\nDEREK SAW has worked in free improvisation and at the cutting edges of jazz since his move to Sheffield\, UK. He was a member of legendary electric free/jazz group Bass Tone Trap\, and in the mid eighties co-founded the respected Hornweb quartet\, while also organising his own Rhythm Division\, which included drummer Paul Hession. More recently he has worked with thereminist Beatrix Ward-Fernandez on her Trio project\, and collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists Sonny Simmons\, Gino Robair\, Linda Sharrock\, Anton Mobin\, Yoko Miura\, and Eun-Jung Kim. \nFor more info please email: jake@access-space.org

SUMMARY:Online Residency Event with Camille Baker and Susanne Palzer
DESCRIPTION:Camille Baker and Susanne Palzer: Intangible Threshold \nThursday\, 05 November 2020\, 2 to 4pm\, online event \nJoin us on YouTube here. \nAccess Space is delighted to present ‘Intangible Threshold’\, a collaboration between Camille Baker and Susanne Palzer for the Access Space Online Residency Programme 2020. \nBaker and Palzer will perform a short ‘choreography’ of a collection of gestures “live” over the internet\, as part of the output of their remote residency experimentations and improvisations. The performance will be followed by a conversation between the artists and Jake Harries\, Access Space’ Director of Art and Innovation. \nIntangible Threshold investigates collaboration and the meaning of connection over distance through screens and available technology. Coming together as two artists from different backgrounds in performance\, Susanne Palzer and Camille Baker were brought together to answer this question: what methods do we have at our fingertips to brainstorm\, devise\, and rehearse live performance in COVID times in 2020? Through performative acts\, digital connection through cameras\, as well as using video conferencing tools\, they look at ways to comment on the meta-issues around distant relationships\, virtual touch\, connections with nature as replacement for human physical interaction\, as well as the current restricted possibilities of performing live in-person. \nYou can read more about their Online Residency here. \n\nCamille Baker \nCamille has been making and curating work in the interactive arts domain\, from installation art to e-textiles and wearable technology\, immersive experience design\, mobile media art\, interactive installation\, the body in digital performance\, media art curating\, and using emerging technologies research and education in dance and performance for over 25 years. She is an interdisciplinary artist\, curator and researcher with a background in digital and electronic art and design practices\, working across creative digital disciplines. She makes work that explores use of unique methods and approaches to extending the body through or with the aid of technology\, to explore expressive non-verbal modes of communication and extended embodiment through interactive and immersive art and performance. Her portfolio can be found at camillebaker.me \nSusanne Palzer \nSusanne is a cross-disciplinary artist\, independent researcher and performer based in Sheffield\, UK. Her main practice investigates the intersection of digital and analogue forms\, with a particular interest in the fusion of digital technology and physical performance. Palzer is the curator of OPENPLATFORM/RAP(s)-TwT.\, a series of micro events that explore the digital with physical means. Most recently she initiated Twelve Months Notice\, a project which explores artistic strategies for negotiating the fundamentally changed situation following the UK’s decision to leave the European Union. All aspects of her practice are concerned with what it means to be a human being in a shifting world and how we negotiate and continuously re-position ourselves in an environment of increasing disembodiment and continuous uncertainty. Susanne Palzer’s work has been shown in the UK\, across Europe and in North America. Palzer has previously been a co-director at Access Space (UK). \nTwelve Months Notice; On/Off; OPEN PLATFORM \n\nRelated\n\n\n\n\n
