Making new work for both Access Space sites, Stephen Carley will be developing existing creative frameworks using large scale photograms, double exposed 35mm film, installation and audio visual performance. The Path Of Least Resistance extends the artists preoccupation with ‘landscape’ by incorporating aspects of the ‘dérive’ or drift, one of psychogeography’s core principles – letting yourself be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters you find there, acknowledging and even celebrating the things we overlook, discard or even abandon.
This dialogue between the artist, the city, the landscape and the materials is fundamentally process led and Carley will be working with materials found ‘on site’ to instigate some of this process, as well as making work ‘in response’.
The photograms and double exposed 35mm photographs are core creative routes within Carley’s creative practise. Each one is experimental by nature but has to adhere to a strict systematic process. The sequential images produced in the darkroom directly inform and influence the audiomaps project, a semi collaborative audio ‘correspondence’. In The Path Of Least Resistance, the ‘layout’ of each photogram will act as a visual ‘score’ or guide in the closing event live collaborative performance at Access Space.
In the disused shop unit at Fitzalan Square, Carley will install a sequence of ‘interventions’ in February and March using projections and an eclectic range of ‘props’.
Carley’s practise (which incorporates drawing and painting linked intrinsically to the photogram process, double exposed 35mm film and ‘audiomaps’) ultimately sets up a creative feedback loop that leads back to the camera, the darkroom, the microphone and the sampler.
